Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) – Noteworthy Titles

Downloadable games require double their final install size during installation; the game installer is downloaded, the installer installs the game and the data is finally deleted. The only exceptions are The Last of Us, which uses its own downloader to download the game, and various F2P/MMO titles. Game patches will download on first launch. The following games are only available on disc or have something wrong with their digital versions that make a disc version potentially a better option. Some of the below games may be playable via the Playstation Now service. Install/patch size is subject to change if new patches are released:

  • 007 Legends
  • 3D Dot Game Heroes – Optional 1220 meg install, 178 meg patch

  • Diablo 3 (removed from the store due to being superseded by the Ultimate Evil Edition – characters and story progression will carry forward to the Ultimate Evil Edition on PS3, and can be exported via your PSN account to the Ultimate Evil Edition on PS4 and Xbox One. Exporting to Xbox One requires integration with a Battle.net account and you will lose any pre-order bonuses.) – Ultimate Evil Edition with a new Act, class, game mode and various gameplay tweaks is available digitally on PS3, PS4, Xbox One and PC, and physically on Xbox 360. The PC version is most up-to-date but requires persistent internet connectivity to Battle.net. This applies to both physical and digital copies and there is no store warning about this, and is essentially identical to the region locking found on PS1 game discs (split into the 3 regions: Americas, Asia, PAL Territories (i.e. Europe and Australia/New Zealand)). Persona 4 Arena Ultimax isn’t region-locked in this manner.

PS3 discs can be from any region but PS2 discs must match the PS3 console’s region. As the PS2 code isn’t being used, any model PS3 can load these songs even if they can’t normally run PS2 game discs. Note that loading PS2 and PS3 discs only works on the PS3 version of the 2014 app and does not work on the PS4.

* – The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games struggle with the limited system RAM available in the PS3, and save games are prone to bloating as the game progresses, eventually leading to the game constantly freezing or crashing. It is strongly recommended to play these games on PC if possible, or at least on Xbox 360 which can allocate more RAM for the system to work with. If you must play these games on PS3, it is recommended to turn off auto-saves, as this will slow down the save game bloating process.

The below games do not use the same save files between their physical and digital counterparts. Switching from one format to the other will require restarting the game entirely. Many, but not all games which highlight the digital versions (e.g. by showing as “GAMENAME (Digital version)” in the XMB) will do this. Although it won’t be listed here, save files between regions (e.g. US and Europe) are usually incompatible, and different editions of the same game may also be incompatible even if they’re both retail editions (in such cases, the digital versions generally use the same saves as the vanilla retail version and not the complete/GOTY version). When switching, make sure the new version is fully patched to ensure save compatibility.
