Microsoft Xbox 360 – Noteworthy Titles

Digital 360 games require a storage medium of at least 8-16 gigs depending on the game. With very few post-2013 exceptions (all of which have Xbox One and PS4 versions), individual digital game size maxes out at 7.8 gigs but may be increased via patches, free compatibility packs, and DLC. The largest official Xbox 360 hard drive is 500 gigs, although external USB storage of up to 2 terabytes is also supported. Unofficial internal “knock-off” hard drives exist, but generally don’t have the partition for original Xbox games, rendering those older games unplayable, and may not be recognized as valid for games requiring an official internal Microsoft hard drive (see list further below).

Games in bold on this list are not playable on Xbox One in any form.

  • 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand (formerly available digitally, no longer purchasable, also on PS3 without trophies)
  • Battlefield 3 (available digitally on PC Origin, and PS3) – Has separate multiplayer and single player disc. For best texture performance, don’t install the discs through the dashboard; only install the 1.5 gig HD pack from disc on launch when prompted – 13.0 gig install with all DLC. Backwards compatible on Xbox One, where it’s digitally available exclusively via EA Access subscription.
  • Battlefield 4 (available digitally on PC Origin, PS3, PS4 and Xbox One) – Hard drive required* – Has a separate single player and multiplayer disc. Has a 2 gig texture pack install on first startup, which can be performed from either disc. Game discs can optionally be installed via the 360 dashboard after this 2 gig in-software install is performed, disc 1 for multiplayer (6.6 gigs plus any purchased DLC) and disc 2 for single player (5.8 gigs). Has a 1.43 gig download update for multiplayer. 11.0 gig minimum install with all DLC.
  • Battlefield: Hardline (available digitally on PC Origin, PS3, PS4 and Xbox One) – Hard drive required* – Has a separate single player and multiplayer disc. 3.5 gig install required plus 756 meg multiplayer update download, discs cannot be installed via dashboard
  • Blazblue: Continuum Shift EXTEND (also on PS3)
  • Blue Dragon (3 discs, backwards compatible on Xbox One, where it installs and boots from Disc 1)
  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (also on PS3, and digitally on PC)
  • Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath
  • The Crew (7.7 gig install required)
  • Dance Central (Kinect required, new copies include a code allowing the game’s songs to be incorporated into Dance Central 2 and 3 [both available digitally] with an additional $5 fee)
  • Dance Dance Revolution Universe (formerly available digitally, no longer purchaseable)
  • Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2 (formerly available digitally, no longer purchaseable)
  • Dance Dance Revolution Universe 3 (formerly available digitally, no longer purchaseable)
  • Dance Dance Revolution Universe 3 Chinese Music Special Edition (same as stock DDR Universe 3 but has an extra 20 Chinese-language pop songs. Asian region Xbox 360 console required)
  • Dance Masters (Kinect required)
  • Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (slightly-tweaked version of Dark Souls II + DLC, which is available digitally. SotFS is available digitally on PC, PS3, PS4 and Xbox One)
  • Dead or Alive 4
  • Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate (and by extension Dead or Alive 5: Last Round) – removed from store with release of Last Round, although LR is not available digitally at all, and only exists on 360 in the form of a free patch which upgrades Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate to Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, with the new content (e.g. characters Honoka and Raidou) available as paid DLC. Note that the 360 and PS3 versions will likely not be receiving further DLC such as costume packs, and these will be exclusive to the PC Steam, PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. Purchase of older DLC packs for the 360 version will also be downloadable for the Xbox One version of the game, where appropriate (this relationship is also true for the PS3 version to the PS4 version).
  • Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 (cannot be installed)
  • Dead Space 2 (available digitally on PC and PS3)
  • Dead Space 3 (available digitally on PC Origin, and PS3)
  • Destiny (only available digitally with all DLC included; “vanilla” edition has been delisted for sale on its own without expansion packs. About 8 gigs of downloaded compatibility packs are required (#5-8; 1-4 are for the pre-2.0 version of the game and can be safely removed), which can be stored on external storage media, as is a 5.5 gig install, which must be on an internal Microsoft hard drive. A dashboard install of the disc (6.9 gigs) to an internal Microsoft hard drive skips the 5.5 gig install.
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut (cannot be installed, non-Director’s Cut is available digitally. The Director’s Cut is available digitally on PC and PS3. Backwards compatible on Xbox One)
  • Diablo III (formerly available digitally, has now been removed due to the release of the Ultimate Evil Edition, called Diablo III: Reaper of Souls on Xbox Live digital store)
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition (available digitally on PS3, PS4, Xbox One and PC, 7.2 gig install required, 763 meg patch)
  • Dragon’s Dogma (superseded by Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen which is available digitally, although savegames from the original disc-based game will unlock content in the re-release; same rules apply on PS3, where the first game is also available on disc only and the re-release on disc and digitally)
  • Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse (formerly available digitally, no longer purchaseable, also on PS3 and PC)
  • Final Fantasy XIII (3 discs, also available on PS3 – 1 Blu-Ray and on PC Steam)
  • Forza Motorsport 2
  • Forza Motorsport 3
  • Forza Motorsport 4
  • Grand Theft Auto V (also available digitally on PS3, PS4, Xbox One and PC, 360 and PS3 versions are no longer updated with new content) – initial game download is 7.68 gigs, with remaining data downloaded on launch. To avoid possible texture pop-in issues, download the secondary data to a different storage medium (e.g. store the initial 7.68 gigs to your internal hard drive and the remaining data on a USB key). The disc version can accomplish the same thing by using the Disc 1 installer to one storage medium and then optionally installing Play Disc 2 to another storage medium. The disc version requires the installation of about 7.6 gigs of data from Disc 1. 37 meg patch.
  • Halo: Anniversary Edition (available in 1080p on Xbox One via Halo: Master Chief Collection, installing the game via the dashboard will avoid the need for caching and improve load times)
  • Halo 3 (available digitally but has longer load times compared to running the disc version without installing, due to caching used by the disc version; available in 1080p on Xbox One via Halo: Master Chief Collection. A single player-only version of Halo 3:ODST is available digitally if you’d like to play the campaign, and its Multiplayer can be obtained as DLC for Halo 3 by purchasing the Mystic Map Pack. Halo 3:ODST’s campaign is also available on Xbox One as DLC for Halo: Master Chief Collection.)
  • Hunted: The Demon’s Forge (also available on PC and PS3)
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition (the vanilla game is available digitally and can be made essentially identical to the Ultimate Edition if all DLC is purchased, although total cost will be considerable even if the items are on sale. Available digitally on PS3, PS4 and PC Steam. Backwards compatible on Xbox One)
  • The Last Remnant (2 discs, available digitally on PC)
  • Lollipop Chainsaw (formerly available digitally, no longer purchasable, also on PS3)
  • Mass Effect (available digitally but running from disc is recommended due to streaming optimizations. Backwards compatible on Xbox One, where the load times are optimized for both physical and digital versions)
  • Mass Effect 2 (2 discs – available digitally on PC and PS3; backwards compatible on Xbox One where it’s available digitally exclusively via subscription to EA Access)
  • Mass Effect 3 (2 discs – available digitally on PC Origin, PS3; backwards compatible on Xbox One where it’s available digitally exclusively via subscription to EA Access)
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes – Update data for the digital version of this game is no longer available due to a store glitch; if your digital version has the update (will says 1.1 on the title screen, filesize 179 megs) it’s recommended not to delete this or play the disc version or you will lose the ability to play the bonus Deja Vu mission with the digital version. Disc-based version has its own version of the update which is incompatible with the digital version. As it never got the update enabling it, the digital version cannot upload saves for use in The Phantom Pain.
  • Mushihimesama Futari (Japanese game, region-free)
  • Nier (also on PS3)
  • RAGE (on 3 discs, also available on PS3 – 1 Blu-ray, Steam, and Mac)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog (a.k.a. Sonic 06, also on PS3 without trophies)
  • Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection (collection of Sega Genesis/MegaDrive games as well as Arcade/Master System. Collection is also available on disc on PS3, no digital version. Many of the individual games are available on Steam, the Wii Virtual Console, or as individual digital downloads on PS3 and 360 with their own sets of trophies/achievements. When disc is inserted into Xbox One, installs Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3)
  • Tetris: The Grand Master Ace (Asian region 360 Console required)
  • The Saboteur (also available on PS3, and digitally on PC Origin)
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist (2 discs, available digitally on PS3 and PC)
  • Too Human
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (formerly available digitally, it and its DLC are no longer purchasable, also on disc on PS3 where its DLC is also no longer available, as well as currently physically and digitally available on PS4, Xbox One and PC Steam)
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV (Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition has a paid DLC granting all in-game Ultra Street Fighter IV features, although title screen and intro will still be for AE.) – Available digitally on PC, PS3, and PS4
  • Wolfenstein (2009)
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order (on 4 discs, 8 gig install required. Available digitally on PS3, PS4, Xbox One and PC)

* – Games requiring a hard drive cannot make use of other storage solutions, such as the 4 gigs of flash storage available in “arcade” consoles or USB sticks.

  • Shooting Love 20XX – A “Games on Demand” title which was never released in physical form outside of Japan. 217.31 meg download

The following games require an Xbox 360 console with an official Microsoft internal hard drive, and are not compatible with units only having 4gb of storage unless they are upgraded with an official Xbox 360 hard drive. They do not support USB storage unless otherwise noted, and this applies whether the game is obtained on disc or as a digital download. All below games are also available for PC, PS4 and/or Xbox One with enhanced graphics and framerate.

  • Alien: Isolation (5.6 gig install required, USB storage device can optionally be used instead)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Rogue (555 meg install required, USB storage device or 4 gig flash can optionally be used instead. Can optionally install entire disc via dashboard instead of performing in-game minimal install). Backwards compatible on Xbox One.
  • Battlefield 4 (only available on disc, 1.9 gig install required, also has 1.43 gig download update for multiplayer. One or both discs can optionally be installed using dashboard after the 1.9 gig install is performed)
  • Battlefield: Hardline (only available on disc, 3.5 gig install required plus 756 meg download update for multiplayer, discs cannot be installed through dashboard)
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (4 gig install required, USB storage devices of 8 gigs or more can optionally be used instead of a hard drive)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (1.8 gig compatibility pack download, USB storage devices can optionally be used instead of a hard drive, 360 and PS3 versions of the game only include multiplayer and zombies mode. Online play requires Xbox Live Gold)
  • The Crew (only available on disc, 7.7 gig install required, USB storage device can optionally be used instead)
  • Destiny (5.5 gig install required. Additionally, there are over 8 gigs of compatibility packs, making the game impossible to update and play on a system with only a 20 gig hard drive unless a USB key is also used with the system for storage. The 5.5 gig install must be done to an official internal hard drive but the compatibility packs may be on USB storage. All compatibility packs and updates are mandatory due to game being online-only, as is Xbox Live Gold. If game is installed to hard drive via dashboard (6.9 gigs), 5.5 gig install is skipped)
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition (only available on disc, 7.1 gig install required, discs cannot be installed through dashboard, 763 meg patch)
  • Far Cry 4 (3.7 gig install required. Can optionally install entire disc using dashboard instead of the mandatory install)
  • Final Fantasy XI (MMO, subscription and Xbox Live Gold required; ability for 360 version to connect to servers will shut down Spring 2016 along with support for the PS2 version, rendering the game PC-only)
  • Football Manager (series, >256 meg storage required for saves)
  • Grand Theft Auto V (7.6 gig install required, USB storage devices of 16 gigs or more can optionally be used instead. Two storage devices are recommended for digital versions or to install both discs, or pop-in will occur as game expects to be able to load from two data sources simultaneously. Digital version initially downloads half the game; on startup, remaining data is added to download history and downloaded)
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (1.7 gig install required, fully runs from hard drive and only uses disc for ownership validation) – NOTE: Update data for patches beyond 1.1 for the digital version of this game are not available due to a store glitch, and digital versions will not currently update at all; if your digital version has the first update (will says 1.1 on the title screen, filesize 179 megs) it’s recommended not to delete this or play the disc version or you will lose the ability to play the bonus Deja Vu mission with the digital version. Disc-based version has its own version of newer updates which is incompatible with the digital version, and it’s not possible to upload the GZ save for use in The Phantom Pain with the digital version.
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (5.5 gig install required, incorrect listing on packaging says 1.7 gigs) – Disc 1 does the required install, Disc 2 can then optionally be installed using the dashboard (6.8 gigs). 499 meg patch, additional 88.71 meg update data for online play
  • Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (1.8 gig install required, USB storage device or 4 gig flash can optionally be used instead)
  • Minecraft: Story Mode (disc only contains data for Episode 1, remaining Episodes require download; full season when complete may require up to 6 gigs of space. 321 meg patch)
  • Need for Speed: Rivals (3 gig install required)
  • Titanfall (installation not required but 1 gig of free space is required for texture caching, Xbox Live Gold required as game is multiplayer only. Disc cannot be installed via dashboard but game is available digitally)
  • Watch Dogs (7.5 gig install required, USB storage device can optionally be used instead)
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order (only available on disc, 8 gig install required, USB storage device can optionally be used instead. Discs cannot be installed via dashboard.)

Note: many other games require storage for DLC, patches, free compatibility packs and similar extra content, but will operate fully from disc without this content, and should invariably be installable to a USB storage device if required.

The following disc-based games cannot be installed (option missing from Xbox dashboard when these discs are in the drive)

  • Battlefield: Hardline
  • Dead or Alive Xtreme 2
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut (vanilla non-Director’s Cut edition is installable from disc and is digitally available)
  • Titanfall (digital version is available)
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order (Discs 2-4; Disc 1 is a mandatory 8 gig install)

North American digital stores only have English versions of software. A select few games have separate SKU’s for other languages like French and Spanish, these non-English versions are generally exclusively available on disc. Some games have separate SKU’s for their DLC; in these cases, having the game in multiple languages requires multiple purchases of the DLC.

  • Alan Wake
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath
  • Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition (note: the original, vanilla version of Diablo 3 is multilingual in North America)
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition (English audio is available as free DLC for those with a non-English version; the audio language can then be changed between English and the other language from the game’s options menu. 1.7 gigs required in addition to the game’s 7.1 gig install size).
  • The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
  • Fable 2
  • Fallout: New Vegas
  • Halo 3
  • Halo 3: ODST
  • Halo: Reach
  • Halo 4

  • Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
  • Mass Effect
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Scene-It (series)
  • Wolfenstein (2009)

List of games where the 360 version is superior to the PS3 version. Most titles have minor differences but this list focuses on more appreciable differences. Console-specific features such as controller format and online infrastructure will be ignored for the purposes of this list. Note that many early PS3 games may require a lengthy installation or patch download, or lack trophies, while all 360 games in the first several years (until about 2013) were required to be installation-free, have a patch size limitation of 64 megabytes, and feature achievements. Also, the PS3 has a slightly higher delay outputting to TV and thus has different timing requirements for fighting games, especially with high-level play. Fighting game tournaments will generally focus on a specific version of the game (usually PS3 due to the console’s relative popularity in Asia and parts of Europe), possibly with controller type restrictions, and participants will practice accordingly.

  • Bayonetta – PS3 version has about half the framerate of the 360 version, less visual detail, and has very lengthy load times unless patched and installed (for PS3 disc versions). The more recent Wii U version is better still than the 360 version, as is the 4K-capable Steam version. Backwards compatible on Xbox One.
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion* – see * note below
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim* – see * note below
  • Fallout 3* – see * note below – Backwards compatible on Xbox One
  • Fallout: New Vegas* – see * note below – Backwards compatible on Xbox One
  • Grand Theft Auto IV – PS3 version is 1024×600 with AA filter, Xbox version is 1280×720 without AA filter but has a better framerate and better effects.
  • Red Dead Redemption – PS3 version is 1024×600, Xbox version is 1280×720, has a better framerate, and better effects. Backwards compatible on Xbox One.
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – PS3 version has framerate drops during certain effect-heavy sequences while the 360 version has a framerate which never drops; most fighting game tournaments will feature this game on the 360 instead of the PS3 as a result, unless there’s an additional reason swaying them to the PS3 (e.g. Sony sponsoring the tournament). Also available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, where the PS4 version has about 1 extra frame of lag.

* – The Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, due to a demanding dynamic world, struggle with the PS3’s low amount of system memory (256 megabytes) and are prone to crashes, save corruption and similar issues making them a last resort for experiencing those worlds, behind the 360 and PC versions. If you must play these games on PS3, disabling auto-saves is recommended to lower the likelihood of save corruption.
